May in Bristol
May means Summer, means sunshine, means outside. Means more great things to do!
This month we're celebrating all things Bristol by taking a look at the things and events that build Bristol's unique personality. These are things to enjoy if you are new to Bristol or want to get to know your city better.
Bristol Ferries- Bands at Beeses- every Fri in May
If you have ever had to commute around Bristol, you’ll know that navigating around the canals and figuring out which bridge to cross can become tiresome. But, if you’re savvy you will have worked out that Bristol ferries are the best way to avoid frustration whilst also being a really cool way to travel. Not only this but they also do great public boat trips, we’ve chosen the Bands at Beeses as one of our top outings for this month. So hop on and enjoy the ride.
Thatchers Haze Session @ Passenger Shed- 6th May
This event brings together two great Bristol things. Live Bristol musicians and cider. Need I say more?
Clifton Suspension Bridge- every Sat and Sun at 3pm
This iconic Bristol landmark is at the heart of what Bristol is all about and you can find out what that is on one of their free tours of the bridge. This is a great opportunity to find out about the history of this beautiful bridge and what it means to look after such an incredible engineering feat. Join onto a tour by finding one of the suspension bridge volunteers (wearing orange high vis) at 3pm every Sat and Sun. Alternatively you can book a private tour for any large group, simply arrange by phone.
Bristol Blue Glass- every sat and sun
Founded back in 1988, blue glass is synonymous with Bristol and the people here have worked hard to keep the blue tradition alive through the years. The art of glassmaking is a beautiful and wonderful thing to behold, so why don’t you!? The studio opens it’s doors to the public each weekend, so you can watch the master glassblowers work FOR FREE. And if you really get into it, they offer bauble blowing workshops too.
Bristol Walking Festival- 1st-31st May
There are so many wonderful modes of transport that you could be forgiven for overlooking the humble hike. But we think that this festival is one of the greatest ways to explore Bristol and soak up your surroundings. There is a packed programme of walks for all ages and fitnesses so get some good shoes on and join in.
We couldn't leave this list of Bristol's best without mentioning the circus! Although to the average Bristolian this may not be obvious, Bristol has one of the most innovative and contemporary circus schools in the world and we think it should be celebrated! It's two sites cover all bases, from adult classes and events to live performances and degree courses.
