Green Bristol 2015
Here at Clifton Short Lets we, like the rest of the city, are very proud that Bristol has been crowned the European Green Capital for 2015! Thanks to charitable, grassroots ways of thinking, independent shops and the Bristol Pound; it is easy to see why Bristol won the Bid!
What better way to celebrate winning the bid than Bristol festival the BIG Green Week! The festival is a celebration of eco-ideas, art and entertainment. This year's festival begins on the 13th June. Visitors can enjoy free family entertainment, talks, workshops, art, music, poetry, comedy and films.
We have been inspired to start thinking about making positive changes in order to become a more green business in 2015. We are amongst many businesses who have now signed the pledge with The Bristol Green Capital Partnership organisation whose aim is to make Bristol “a low carbon city with a high quality of life for all”. Your business can sign the pledge here: We’ve been researching some of the best green initiatives in the city and have compiled a list of some great company’s who are inspiring us to be greener this year!
Bright Green Futures provide sustainable homes and plots to build sustainable homes. The aim behind this fantastic business initiative is to improve quality of life whilst reducing the impact of development on the planet. The business concept was inspired by the beautiful housing that came out of the Ashley Vale eco-community self-built site and has now expanded to provide expert advice on construction and development of earth-friendly homes whilst focusing also on people empowerment.
Food Cycle is a volunteer run community project who’s aim is to reduce food waste whilst simultaneously eliminating poverty and social isolation through providing nutritious meals. Surplus food is collected and cooked by volunteers before being served to vulnerable groups. This innovative community project has sparked the interest of thousands of volunteers and even big donators such as the like of M&S and ASDA!
Bikes are donated, refurbished and given away or sold to raise funds at The Bristol Bike Project; their aim is to empower marginalized groups in society, who can benefit from sustainable transport options. Friendships are made during workshops where valuable skills are learnt. Repair, re-use and recycle, get your bike serviced here in the name of sustainable transport and a fantastic charitable cause.
Avon Gorge and Downs Wildlife Project
This project was set up back in 1999 and is in partnership with Bristol City Council and Bristol Zoo Gardens. It aims to provoke interest in, as well as protect, the wildlife of the Avon Gorge and Downs. Throughout the year the project runs walks, talks, courses, children’s events and family events.
Sustrans work with Local Authorities as well as transport providers to achieve sustainable changes in travel behaviour. As well as influencing local decision makers and boosting local economies, Sustrans aims to get communities and young people active.
The Sofa Project (Shift Old Furniture Around) collects quality furniture and other household goods and makes them available at low prices in their Bristol outlets. The project helps to reduce landfill, and supports the Bristol community by providing goods at affordable prices. SOFA Project will collect, refurbish, deliver and install their products providing excellent service.
