Art in Bristol
Bristol is a thriving hub for exciting contemporary artwork. Here are a few ideas of places to visit if you are planning to explore the arty side of Bristol.
Come to “The Square” to enjoy innovative contemporary works of art. This is a truly inspirational space where you can host private functions and experience an exquisite dining experience. If that’s not enough to entice you, "The Square" also offers you the opportunity to purchase your own unique work of art. With three changing exhibitions a year featuring drawing, painting and printing to digital-based media and video works, this is a real feast for the eye. The current exhibition "Subtract the Abstract" featuring art by Susan Bleakley was launched on 5th August and can be viewed until the 24th January.
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery
The Art Gallery is one of the few spaces in Bristol in which classical art work is displayed. One of its current exhibitions William Hogarth: Painter and Printmaker(16th May-31st August) is a definite must-see.
The Tate in London has lent the Gallery some spectacular oil paintings and prints by the famous printer and oil painter William Hogarth. What a wonderful way to explore the work of this great artist who knew how best to satirise British society with a paintbrush!
If you’re planning to get arty yourself and don’t mind paint on your hands, then head down to the Bristol Folk House. Sign up for Arts & Crafts, Pottery and Life Drawing. Enrolments for the Autumn term are now open.
Right by the harbour side, Arnolfini displays experimental artwork with plenty of educational programmes for schools and families. On 8th August, as part of the Richard Long: TIME AND SPACE programme of events, sound artist Tom White presents “Heavy Feet” - an interactive workshop and performance that explores the sounds of walking and how it is effected by our surroundings. Sonic findings will be gathered and performed, creating a live soundscape that explores the relationship between the act of walking and architecture.
Looking for a space solely dedicated to creative practices? Then Spike Island is the perfect place for you. As an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design it offers exhibitions and workshops to promote Art as the centre of human existence. Go there for inspiration and explore the current exhibitions Reto Pulfer "Gewaesserzeiten" (4th July-20th September), Patrick Staff “The Foundation" (4th July-20th September) and Harry Meadley, "Level 3"(7th-23rd August).
