The Best Summer Day Trips from Bristol

When the sun comes out, there are lots of new places you can explore within a few hours from Bristol. We’ve put together some recommendations – why not try and tick all six off your list this Summer?

Bath

Just a short 15-min train ride from Bristol Temple Meads, a summer day in Bath is a no-brainer. Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage city, packed with history, architecture, and independent shops. You can wander along the canal, explore the stunning Georgian crescents, visit the infamous Roman Baths and enjoy a range of eateries and shops.

Cheltenham

Around 40 minutes by train, Cheltenham is a great option for those looking for impressive architecture and a thriving festival scene. You can explore the Montpellier District, browse boutique shops and enjoy lunch in one of the town’s many independent restaurants. Pittville Park is ideal for a leisurely afternoon, with lakeside walks and plenty of space to relax. If you’re visiting during summer, check the local events calendar for food festivals, outdoor cinema screenings and live music performances.

Portishead

Just 30 minutes away by car or bus, Portishead is the perfect destination if you’re craving some sea air without the long journey to the coast. The marina is lined with cafés and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for a relaxed afternoon.

Take a stroll along the coastal path towards Battery Point for stunning views across the Severn Estuary and, on a clear day, all the way to Wales. You can also enjoy the town’s popular open-air swimming pool, adding to Portishead’s appeal as an easy and enjoyable day trip from Bristol.

Yatton

Just 20 minutes away by train, Yatton is a charming village surrounded by beautiful countryside, offering easy access to a variety of walking and cycling routes. A favourite destination for cyclists, the Strawberry Line is a traffic-free cycle path that follows a former railway line through orchards, open fields, and picturesque villages.

Along the route, you’ll find welcoming local cafés serving freshly brewed coffee and homemade cakes, making Yatton the perfect destination for anyone looking to escape the city for a relaxing day outdoors.

Exeter

Around an hour away by train, Exeter combines the feeling of a small city with easy access to the beautiful Devon countryside. Visitors can explore the city’s historic streets, discover a wide range of shops and eateries, and visit the iconic Exeter Cathedral.

On warmer days, head to Exeter Quay, where you can hire kayaks or paddleboards, stroll along the waterfront, or simply relax with a riverside lunch. With its blend of rich history, lively atmosphere, and outdoor activities, Exeter is an ideal destination for anyone looking to experience the best of Devon during the summer months.

Glastonbury

Around an hour away by car, Glastonbury is famous for much more than its world-renowned music festival. On a day trip to Glastonbury, you can explore its unique and quirky shops, browse independent bookshops, and discover artisan markets before climbing Glastonbury Tor for panoramic views across the Somerset countryside.

One of Bristol’s greatest strengths is its location. Whether you’re looking for a coastal walk, a countryside adventure, or a cultural city break, there are countless destinations within easy reach. From charming villages and historic cities to scenic coastlines and rolling countryside, you can easily explore somewhere new. Why not challenge yourself to tick them all off this summer?
